Ceramic e.max veneers in Bab Ezzouar, Algiers, Algeria

An e.max veneer is a thin shell of ceramic bonded to the visible face of a tooth: it changes its shade and shape, or closes a small gap, without moving it.

What is a ceramic veneer?

Ceramic veneers are thin, made-to-measure shells produced in a dental laboratory and bonded to the front of the teeth. They are also called porcelain veneers, or e.max veneers when they are made of lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic. At Beausourire, a dental practice in Bab Ezzouar, in east Algiers, the first step is an examination to check whether your teeth suit veneers or whether other treatment comes first.

  • Only the visible face

A crown covers the whole tooth; a veneer covers only its front, sometimes wrapping over the biting edge. So much less of the tooth has to be removed.

  • A step that cannot be undone

In most cases a thin layer of enamel is removed so the veneer does not look bulky. That preparation is not reversible, which is why the decision comes after the examination.

  • Ceramic or composite

Composite is shaped on the tooth itself, in fewer visits, and is easy to repair, but it stains and wears more. Ceramic is made in the lab and keeps its shade better.

  • A veneer does not move the tooth

A veneer changes a tooth’s shape and shade, not where it sits. When teeth are out of line, aligner treatment may be suggested before veneers are considered.

Before and after: top, spaced and uneven front teeth; bottom, the same teeth after treatment, even.

Which cases are veneers suited to?

Veneers are for healthy teeth whose look bothers you: colour, shape, wear, small gaps. Decay and gum problems are treated first; it is then at the examination that you find out whether a veneer is the right treatment or another one suits you better.

When veneers are often considered

  • A tooth that stays dark despite whitening
  • A chipped, worn or irregularly shaped tooth
  • Small gaps between the front teeth
  • Teeth of different sizes, or slightly crooked

Needs a fuller assessment or another option

  • Clenching or grinding, especially at night
  • Upper teeth that overlap the lower ones a lot
  • Decay, large fillings or gum problems to treat first
  • Clearly misaligned teeth: aligning them may come first

The enamel removed for a veneer does not grow back, and a veneer placed on an unhealthy tooth or gum can make the problem worse. That is why the plan is decided after a full examination.

How are veneers fitted?

Fitting ceramic veneers usually goes through six stages, over at least two appointments with the lab work in between. How many depends on the number of veneers and on any treatment needed first.

  1. Step 1: The examination

A check of the teeth, the gums and the way your upper and lower teeth meet, with photos. Decay and gum problems are treated first; then the number of veneers is decided.

  2. Step 2: The design

Shape and shade are chosen with you. Depending on the case, a resin trial placed over the teeth shows the planned result before any preparation.

  3. Step 3: Preparation

Usually under local anaesthetic, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front. A conventional or digital impression then goes to the lab.

  4. Step 4: Temporaries

While the lab makes the veneers, temporary veneers may protect the prepared teeth.

  5. Step 5: Bonding

Each veneer is tried in to check its shape, shade and fit, then bonded to the tooth, and your bite is checked.

  6. Step 6: The check-up

It often takes a few days to get used to a veneer. If your bite feels different, say so: it can be adjusted at the practice.

How long does it take to have veneers fitted?

Expect at least two appointments as a rule: the preparation, then the bonding once the lab has made the veneers. If decay, the gums or the alignment of the teeth need treating first, the whole plan takes longer.

Veneer, crown or composite: what differs

The three do not solve the same problem, and none of them moves teeth. The survival figures below come from different studies with different follow-up periods: a rough guide, not a ranking.

Can I have veneers fitted in Algeria if I live abroad?

Ceramic veneers cannot be fitted at a distance: preparing the teeth and bonding the veneers happen in the dental chair, usually over at least two appointments with the making of the veneers in between.

If you live in the UK, France, Canada, Belgium, Germany or the Gulf, book the first appointment during a stay in Algeria: the examination tells you how many appointments and trips to plan.

What decides the number of trips

  1. Treatment needed first: decay, gums, sometimes alignment
  2. How long the lab takes to make the veneers
  3. How long your stays in Algeria last

Looking after your veneers

  • Brushing and check-ups

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day: decay can still start around a veneer. Keep up your dental check-ups.

  • What can damage them

Biting your nails, chewing a pen, cracking roasted seeds (zriâa) or fruit stones with your front teeth, or opening packets with your teeth: a veneer can chip, crack or come loose.

  • Grinding and sport

If you grind or clench your teeth, a night guard may be suggested to protect the veneers. For contact sports, wear a mouthguard.

  • Coffee, tea and smoking

Coffee, tea and smoking can stain the edge of a veneer. Ceramic stains little; composite stains more.

Veneers: answers to common questions

How much do veneers cost in Algeria?

The cost of veneers depends on how many teeth are treated, the material and any treatment needed first (decay, gums, alignment). At Beausourire, the price is set after the examination, once the plan has been agreed with you. The first consultation is free. Ways to pay: cash, an Algerian CIB or Edahabia card, bank transfer.

Does having veneers fitted hurt?

The tooth is usually prepared under local anaesthetic. In the days that follow, some sensitivity to hot or cold is possible, and it takes a little time to get used to the veneer. Tell the practice about discomfort that lasts or a bite that feels different.

How long do ceramic veneers last?

Often for many years, though not for ever: in published studies, about 97% of lithium disilicate veneers, the ceramic of e.max veneers, were still in place after around ten years. A veneer can still chip or come loose.

Do teeth have to be filed down for veneers?

In most cases, yes: a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front, and that cannot be undone. It is far less than for a crown: in laboratory measurements on resin teeth, preparing a veneer removed about 3 to 30% of the part of the tooth above the gum, against 63 to 72% for a crown.

Veneer or crown: what is the difference?

A veneer covers only the front of a tooth that is still sound; a crown covers the whole tooth and is used more when it is badly damaged or weakened. The choice depends on how much of the tooth is left, and it is made at the examination.

Veneers or teeth whitening: which should I choose?

Whitening lightens natural teeth without drilling them, but its effect is not permanent and it changes neither shape nor gaps. A veneer changes shade and shape, at the cost of preparing the enamel. For teeth that are only yellowed, whitening is usually considered first. Beausourire offers both treatments.

Can I whiten my teeth after having veneers?

Whitening only works on natural teeth: it does not change the shade of a veneer or a crown. If you want lighter teeth, it is better to whiten them first, so the veneers can be matched to the lightened shade.

Veneers or aligners: which comes first?

They solve different problems: aligners move teeth, veneers change their shape and shade. When teeth are out of line, aligning them first can reduce how much enamel has to be removed, and sometimes makes veneers unnecessary. At Beausourire, aligners are also used to prepare teeth before veneers.

What is a “Hollywood smile”?

“Hollywood smile” is the popular name for a cosmetic makeover of the whole smile, a treatment the practice offers: several visible teeth receive veneers, sometimes crowns, often after other treatment or whitening. The number of teeth, their shape and their shade are decided with you at the examination, according to the state of your teeth.

Is there an option that leaves the teeth untouched?

Whitening lightens teeth without drilling them, and a composite veneer often needs less preparation than a ceramic one. There are also removable veneers (Snap-on smile), which the practice offers: a thin, made-to-measure shell that clips over the teeth without preparing them and can be taken out. At the examination, you will find out what suits your teeth.
