Dental implants in Bab Ezzouar, Algiers, Algeria
A dental implant, or tooth implant, is an artificial root, usually made of titanium, placed in the jawbone, which later carries a crown.
How does a dental implant work?
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. Placed in the jawbone, it becomes fixed there over a few months; an abutment screwed onto the implant then holds the crown, the visible part of the tooth. It is an option when a tooth is missing or has to come out. At Beausourire, a dental practice in Bab Ezzouar, east Algiers, an examination and bone X-rays first show whether it is possible.
Root, abutment, crown
Three parts: the implant in the bone, the abutment that passes through the gum and the crown that replaces the tooth. Only the crown can be seen.
The bone bonds to the implant
After placement, bone grows against the implant and holds it: this is osseointegration. It takes time, and everything that follows depends on it.
Neighbouring teeth are left alone
An implant does not lean on the teeth next to it. A conventional bridge, by contrast, means trimming them to take crowns.
One tooth or several
Dental implants can carry a crown, a bridge replacing several teeth side by side, or hold a full denture in place.
Who are dental implants suitable for?
An implant is considered for adults missing one or more teeth, or about to lose one, when the bone and gums allow it. The clinical examination and X-rays of the bone decide.
Situations where an implant is often considered
- A lost tooth between healthy teeth
- A badly damaged tooth that has to come out
- Several missing teeth in the same area
- A removable denture that will not stay in place
To assess before deciding
- Gum disease, to treat first
- Bone too thin or too low, which may need a graft
- Smoking, which raises the risk of failure
- Diabetes, to bring under control before surgery
- Medication that acts on the bones, for osteoporosis or cancer
- Radiotherapy to the head or neck
- Jaws that are still growing
Peri-implantitis, an inflammation that destroys the bone around an implant, is more likely after gum disease (periodontitis), with poor plaque control and without regular follow-up after treatment.
What are the stages of dental implant treatment?
From examination to crown, implant treatment happens in several stages spread over a few months. This is the most common order; a bone graft adds a stage.
-
Step 1: The examination
Teeth, gums, bite and general health all count. Decay and gum disease are treated before any implant is planned.
-
Step 2: Imaging the bone
A panoramic X-ray and often a 3D scan (cone beam) measure the height and width of the bone where the implant is to go.
-
Step 3: Placing the implant
Under local anaesthetic, the implant is placed in the bone where the root used to be. The gum is closed over it, or around a small healing screw.
-
Step 4: Healing
The bone bonds to the implant. In the conventional approach, it stays without a final tooth for several months; a temporary tooth can sometimes fill the gap.
-
Step 5: Impression and crown
Once the implant has bonded, an impression is taken to make the crown, which is fixed to the implant through the abutment. If the gum was closed over the implant, a small procedure under local anaesthetic first reopens it to fit a healing screw, and the impression follows a few weeks later.
-
Step 6: Follow-up
Regular check-ups look at the gum and bone around the implant, with a professional clean when needed.
How many months from implant to crown?
It usually takes several months to go from a newly placed implant to the final crown: 3 to 8 months in the conventional approach, while the bone bonds to the implant. A bone graft makes the timeline longer.
Free consultationImplant, bridge or removable denture: what differs
Three ways to replace a missing tooth, which do not treat the neighbouring teeth in the same way. The practice also offers the bonded Maryland bridge in zirconia, often chosen for a front tooth, and dentures.
| Criterion | Implant | Bridge (conventional or bonded) | Removable denture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neighbouring teeth | Untouched: the implant takes the place of the root | Conventional: crowns on both neighbours. Bonded: wings at the back, very little drilling | Partial: usually clasps on remaining teeth |
| Fixed or removable | Fixed | Fixed | Comes out, especially at night |
| Surgery in the bone | Yes, under local anaesthetic | No | No |
| Root replaced | Yes: enough bone is needed, or a graft | No: the false tooth rests on the gum | No |
| Cleaning | Brush and interdental brushes around the implant | Floss or a small brush under the false tooth | Out of the mouth, every day |
| Appointments | Several, over a few months, healing included | A few, once the gum has healed | A few, then time to get used to it |
| Lifespan | Many years if it is looked after | Several years with good care | Often replaced every 5 to 8 years |

A dental implant in Algeria while living abroad: how many trips?
In the conventional approach, placing the implant and fitting the crown are several months of healing apart: plan at least two stays in Algeria, one for the implant and one for the crown, then check-ups.
For patients living in the UK, France, Canada, Belgium, Germany or the Gulf, everything starts with the examination, during a stay in Algiers; the timing of the next stays is then worked out with you at the practice.
Ask for your implant card or the traceability labels from its box (brand, reference, diameter, length, lot number), and keep your X-rays: your dentist where you live will need them to find compatible parts.
To prepare the trip (photos, X-rays, payment, documents for your insurer), see also the guide “Dental care in Algiers, Algeria, when you live abroad”.
What sets the number of trips
- How much bone there is, and whether a graft is needed
- The healing time before the crown
- The number of implants and the type of crown
Looking after an implant day to day
Brush and interdental brushes
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and use an interdental brush around the implant every day: plaque left there inflames the gum.
Regular check-ups
Without regular follow-up after treatment, the risk of peri-implantitis rises. Keep your check-ups, even when all seems well.
Signs to report
A red, swollen or bleeding gum around the implant, or a crown or implant that moves: get it seen before your next check-up.
Smoking
In smokers, implants fail more often and infections after surgery are more common. Talk it over with the dentist before treatment.
Dental implants: what patients ask
What does a dental implant cost in Algiers?
The price of an implant depends on the number of implants, whether a graft is needed and the crown chosen, and it can only be set after the examination and imaging of the bone. Ask for a written quote that sets out each stage and what it covers: implant, abutment, crown, imaging. At Beausourire, the first consultation is free.
Does having an implant placed hurt?
The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic while the implant is placed. Over the next few days, discomfort, swelling or a bruise are possible; the dentist tells you what to take and what to avoid. Pain that gets worse instead of easing should be reported to the practice.
Implant or bridge: which should I choose?
A conventional bridge means trimming the two neighbouring teeth to take crowns; an implant leaves them untouched, but involves surgery in the bone and a few months of healing. For a front tooth, the bonded Maryland bridge in zirconia, which the practice offers, is held by a wing on the back of a neighbouring tooth, with very little drilling. The examination shows what your teeth and bone allow.
Does a dental implant last a lifetime?
No lifespan can be promised. On average, 96% of implants are still in place after 10 years. The crown may wear or crack and need redoing: care and check-ups matter for both.
Can I get a dental implant in one day?
This is called immediate loading: a tooth is fixed to the implant the same day or within a week, without waiting for healing. It is only an option in some cases, depending on the bone and how stable the implant is when placed. Published studies show no clear difference in the number of failures compared with the conventional approach, but patients in them were followed for a year at most.
Can I have an implant if I smoke?
It is possible, but smoking raises the risk: in published studies, 6.35% of implants placed in smokers failed, against 3.18% in non-smokers, with more infections after surgery too. Tell the dentist whether you smoke, and how much: the treatment plan takes it into account.
Is there an age limit for dental implants?
There is no fixed upper age: general health, bone and gums matter more. The risk of losing the implant does, however, seem higher from age 65. In teenagers, the usual practice is to wait until the jaws have stopped growing.
My dentist says there is not enough bone. Can I still have an implant?
Sometimes. A bone graft, or a sinus lift for the upper back teeth, can rebuild volume before or during placement, though it makes treatment longer. Otherwise, a bridge or a denture remains an option. A 3D scan helps decide.
Can the body reject an implant?
Not in the sense of an organ transplant being rejected. An implant can, however, fail to bond to the bone, or be lost later, for example through an infection around it (peri-implantitis). Smoking, gum disease and poor cleaning raise that risk.
What happens if I do not replace a missing tooth?
Over time, the neighbouring teeth can tilt into the gap and the opposing tooth can move out towards it; the bite can shift and food can get trapped, which encourages decay and gum disease. The bone in the area also shrinks, mostly in the months after the extraction: the longer the wait, the more likely a bone graft is needed before an implant. There is no need to decide on the day, but the gap is worth an examination. If teeth have already drifted into the gap, aligners can, depending on the case, move them back before the implant: Beausourire uses them for this too.
